Athletics: Goals & Objectives for the 09-10 Athletic School Year |
|
A. Student/Athletes: ACADEMICS East Wake Academy students participating in school athletics are first and foremost, students. The term is “student/athlete”, with an intentional emphasis on “student” being first. As in the past, academic success is a priority for all students and to participate in the athletic program, students must maintain passing grades of “C” or better in all classes with academic probation from a team if grades fall below this standard. A student may be re-instated to a team once the classroom teacher confirms the work has improved to the standard set for student/athletes.
Objective All student/athletes demonstrate academic success throughout the school year and on all state mandated End-of Grade and/or End-of-Course testing.
Goal 100% passing rate for grade level promotion and 100% passing of EOG and EOC testing
CITIZENSHIP Student/athletes at East Wake Academy will set a positive example of what being a citizen of this institution requires. Good sportsmanship is an integral requirement of citizenship. Any acts of poor sportsmanship may be subject to team discipline and/or school discipline. Any school or team disciplinary suspension will result in automatic suspension from a team. To be re-instated on a team following a disciplinary suspension, a committee will meet to discuss the circumstances and may or not choose to meet with the student. Whether or not the student is part of this discussion is at the discretion of the committee. The decision of the committee is final. The committee will be made up of the Athletic Administrator (committee chair), Assistant Athletic Director, coach of student’s team, and the House Administrator or designee.
Objective All student/athletes demonstrate good citizenship, sportsmanship, and respect at all times as a representative of the Athletic Department and of East Wake Academy.
Goal No disciplinary suspensions or reports for student/athletes. B. Athletic Administration PROGRAM Over the years, East Wake Academy has grown in its sports offerings. There has been an ebb and flow as to the number of sports. The inconsistency of sports being offered is not healthy for the departmental growth. Increasing the number of sports being offered is not as important as the sustainability of the sports being offered. Competitiveness with the schools we play in our chosen sports is very important in the health of the department. Talent of the individual players and coaches will always vary from year to year. However, for the program to develop in a healthy manner, a level of competitiveness must be achieved. To be non-competitive season after season in a particular sport may be an indication that this is a sport not suited for our program. We must evaluate our offerings to insure the overall health of the program. In order to achieve sustainability in sport offerings and to improve competitiveness, we have to implement a system by which we cultivate good coaching by evaluating the individual in: 1) knowledge of the sport, 2) ability to teach skill sets and strategies 3) nurturing of the coach/player relationships. The decision of who coaches what sport is our responsibility and the selection should be made with deliberate consideration of the three criteria: 1) knowledge of the sport 2) ability to teach skill sets and strategies 3) nurturing of the coach/player relationships. Objective Our athletic program must achieve sustainability in our existing sport offerings. We must be efficient with our resources and use these to the betterment of the program and our student/athletes. Through evaluation, participation level, and competitiveness, sustain our present sport offerings and add sport offerings that will strengthen the department.
Goals 1) Maintain number of sports offered and sustain MS boy’s soccer and MS/HS cross country into the next school year.
2) Improve competitiveness of HS programs by utilizing MS programs to develop talent and skill sets.
3) Evaluate and determine if and what sports to add for the next school year.
4) Develop and implement an evaluation tool for coaches.
5) Plan and place coaches with more deliberateness to ensure the appropriate coaches are with the correct sports. C. Parents BOOSTER’S CLUB Booster’s Club is an integral part of the athletic department as its parent support arm. Booster’s Club provides needed income to support purchases and cover other incurred expenses that are outside of the school budget. Booster’s Club is also very important in the health of the program by providing support through attendance to games and transportation of the student/athletes to games and events.
Objective Booster’s Club has become a viable and sustainable club. As we move forward, the focus will be to improve communications with PAL to better facilitate cooperation with PAL and the school community in support of the student/athletes and the school as a whole.
Goals 1) By working with PAL and the school population, Booster’s will increase the amount of fundraising to better support the athletic program.
2) Booster’s Club will be instrumental in increasing the enthusiasm and support of the athletic department and of the student/athletes.
D. Coaches COACHES Coaches should be versed in teaching the skill sets for their respective sports. Strategies for playing the game competitively is an essential knowledge the coaches should possess. As coaches, these adults are entrusted with the safety and appropriate care of our student/athletes. Communication within the athletic department is essential as is communication with student/athletes and parents. Coaches are charged with cultivating this communication and with the development of the student/athletes as players and young adults.
Objectives All teams will be coached in a competitive manner. Coaches will exemplify professionalism and good sportsmanship at all times while serving in the capacity of a coach for East Wake Academy.
Goal Coaches will ensure communication with student/athletes and parents is open and constructive. Any problems that arise will be dealt with promptly and communicated to Administration to avoid problems growing and becoming detrimental to the department. |
