A Message from the Superintendent 5/23/2021

Week of May 23, 2021

We hope that everyone enjoyed another beautiful weekend!  We are closing out the year strong, and we are so close!  Many of the required COVID protocols have been lifted in public but still, apply in the school setting.  We are still required to wear face coverings indoors. We are still following the NC Tool Kit guidelines for social distancing.

If you have been noticing our COVID dashboard, we have had positive cases on campus.  So, we need to continue to be safe.  Thank you to our families who have been communicating with staff when their child has had symptoms.  Our cases appear to have been community spread events, and we need everyone to be careful and continue to wear their masks.

Chromebook Returns – As we close out the year, we need to collect the School Chromebooks from our families.  We need to collect ALL Chromebooks that our families have used.  We need to clean, repair, and update the Chromebooks to get them ready for next year.

Dropoff dates and times are as follow:

Device Drop off - Drive-thru:

Location: HS entrance off Industrial Drive - Under the Awning/Overhang (Staff Lot).

Times: 8:00 -1000 am and 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Dates: May 24th- 27th and June 1st-3rd

  • DO NOT EXIT your car – staff will be on hand to help
  • Make sure you return the Chromebook and the Charger
  • Make sure your child’s name is on / with the Chromebook

The staff will have extra-large ZIPLOCK bags for you to place the Chromebook in.

** Your child can also return their Chromebook to their teacher on their last day on campus – Please follow HOUSE admin instructions.

Huge Thanks to the Mudcats – We want to give a HUGE shoutout to the Mudcats! The Mudcats hosted our HS Varsity Baseball game versus Franklin Academy on Thursday.  Our EWA Eagles won the game with a WALK-OFF win in the seventh.  The Mudcats were great hosts, and we appreciate the community connection!

HOUSE – Please follow your HOUSE admins messaging over the last two weeks, so you will know what is coming up and what is expected in each HOUSE.  If you have questions, please contact the HOUSE admin.

EOG/EOC – Our students have done a great job with the required testing from the State.  We will finish up this week with all State testing.  We just want our students to remember to do their best.

EOG / EOC Testing – Why are we testing?  Federal and State mandates require the EOG / EOC to be given.  We do not have an option. The EOG /EOC does not have an “opt-out” for any individual. The push by the Feds/State to continue with testing is to collect data on where students are in their learning and give a baseline for future growth. With all tests, there is a feeling of stress.  In this case, please talk with your child about doing their best.  Remember – your child is not a number and EOY testing is just a snapshot in time.   Please just hang in there!

Board Election Information - The EWA Board of Directors will elect Directors for two (2) expiring seats (terms are ending June 2021) at its regular meeting on June 8 at 7:30 pm in the Baker Center (inside the High School).  Any person interested in applying for a Board seat should submit a current resume or bio, along with interest and vision for EWA. Submittals should include contact information and shall be delivered via electronic mail to stephanie.hall@eastwakeacademy.org.   A question-and-answer session will be held before the board meeting from 6:00–7:00 pm on June 8 in the Baker Center (NCDHHS COVID-19 safety protocols are required).

Link to information on the website: Board Election Information Returning to EWA – This has been a challenging year for families and teachers for many reasons. Much has been asked of you, your family, and the school.  As a school, we have tried to navigate the COVID storm and support our students in the best ways we could.  It has indeed been a balancing act.  We look forward to the future and the start of the 2021-22 school year.  We know our return will not be back to so-called “normal,” but it will be back to what we do best – Face to Face instruction. We plan to be 100% back on campus! We will take what we have learned during COVID and continue to improve as a school.  We will never deviate from our mission to do what is best for kids!

We look forward to having everyone back for next year!

As you reflect on the school year, if you decide not to return to EWA for the 2021-22 school year, please let us know ASAP to help you with your child’s school record transfer and help another family make their transition to EWA! Please contact Kim Campbell if you have enrollment or withdrawal questions.  kcampbell@eastwakeacademy.org
